Affiliate ads can be used to make money from a variety of products, such as web hosting, books, music, and software. The idea is simple: sign up for the site you wish to promote, grab your personalised affiliate link, and put it on your site. If someone clicks your link and subsequently makes a purchase, you'll get a payment.

How you get paid differs from site to site. Some will give you a bonus but delay paying you for a few months, as it prevents people from signing up then immediately cancelling. Other sites may not pay you anything at all until you reach a certain quota of referrals.

As with all good ideas, everyone wants a piece of the pie. Other people will be posting their links and asking visitors to click them, helping to "support the site" in the process. So how can you get people to click your links and earn money in the process?

Choose reliable vendors with clear payment options

Regardless of what you're trying to sell, choosing a poor provider who isn't going to pay you regularly is a bad move. Do some research before committing to a site - and try to keep your initial campaigns small until you get your first payment.

Choose decent products

You may find that some products will earn you high affiliate payments, but how many people will actually want to buy those products? Will you be able to sell them? If not, choose something a bit more familiar. If you think your visitors will be more interested in books or music than web hosting or domain names, then choose the option you're most comfortable with. Of course, the ads may not necessarily end up on your site, which is why you also need to look at a further option...

Choose an ad network that supports affiliate ads

Sometimes you'll find a great affiliate avenue that doesn't really suit any of your own sites. You could set up a site, but this is a time consuming process for something that might not work out. A much better option is to use CMF Ads. Once you've signed up, you'll be able to add sites to your account. Choose the Advertiser account and you'll be able to add an affiliate link. You can then add funds to your account via PayPal, and start advertising.

With ads as low as $0.01 for a 30 day duration, the amount of money you spend should be far less than the affiliate bonuses you'll make. This is currently a relatively untapped market as most of the ads appear to be from blogs and websites - few are from affiliates. The key is to get on board now so you don't miss the boat.

Choose a decent ad image

The essence of any online advertising campaign is the quality of the image you use for your ads. If it's dull, uninspired, ambiguous, or it doesn't give the visitor a compelling reason to click it - chances are that your campaign won't perform particularly well. It doesn't matter whether you place the ad on your own sites, on higher traffic sites or on ad networks. An ill-conceived ad image will not produce the results that will make you money. So, aim for a striking ad that tells people exactly why they should click it. Be original, be witty, be clever - and try a few different ads to see which ones perform the best.

Choose sites where your ad will perform well

There's nothing worse than a good ad on the wrong site. Pick your target audience carefully. Who will be interested in buying this product? Which sites do they visit? Put your affiliate ad there. Again, using CMF Ads will help you immensely, as you can experiment with a wide range of sites for very little money. Keep an eye on which sites give you the best results - and remember it's not all about impressions. Affiliate ads won't pay you anything unless people buy something - and to make that happen, they have to click the ad. Simply seeing the ad isn't going to help much. Whereas some ads are good for mass exposure, affiliate ads need to be clicked or there's not much point in placing them.
