There is a common misconception that you must go hungry in order to lose weight. Not only do I believe this is untrue, I believe it is very ineffective due to the damage that may occur to your metabolism. Here are five simple ways to avoid hunger while dieting.
Foods are not created equally, particularly when it comes to calories. As an example, you can eat over thirty cups (nearly 7lbs!) of celery for the same number of calories (approximately 430) of just a single slice of chocolate fudge cake. While that may not be the most practical nor appealing alternative, the easiest way to reduce calories is to switch to lower calorie versions of your favourite foods.
Not only is water essential for our body, it has zero calories and can help you to feel fuller between meals. Try to replace as many other beverages with water, you should aim to drink at least six glasses every day. I find it easiest to keep a chilled bottle (preferably a reusable one, such as Sigg or Kleen Kanteen) by my side at all times and take regular sips throughout the day.
You may have heard of Low GI diets, they are especially good for diabetics. But even for non-diabetics, low GI foods take longer for your body to process which leaves you feeling fuller than a high GI alternative. As a general rule, foods high in carbohydrates (such as breads and pastas) are often also high GI. Wholegrain and reduced sugar options are usually your best choice for lowering the GI values of these foods.
Many people eat out of boredom (or a number of other emotions) rather than a genuine hunger. If you find yourself doing the same, try taking up a new hobby. Any hobby that doesn't involve food would be a good choice but if you choose a physical hobby such as dancing or even using a Wii Fit, you'll find it does double duty as a boredom buster and weight loss achiever in one. Plus it's fun!
We all need a little indulgence from time to time and denying yourself can lead to an unhealthy binge when you finally cave to the temptation. If you are craving chocolate, have a piece or two of a high quality dark chocolate instead of scoffing an entire large candy bar.
